Exeter High School Student-Run Newspaper!
Should the Talon Become a Class?
Our school newspaper, The Talon, is run by students putting in hard work to release an article, column, and/or interview each month. With all of this extra work the students have and the experience gained towards their English skills, shouldn’t the Talon provide English elective credits? In the past, The Talon used to be a class that students at EHS could take. Why not have it as a class again for students interested in journalism and writing?
The newspaper publications elective that was previously offered was removed due to budget cuts. An English Teacher, Ms. Christians, proposed the class to run again in 2019 due to the amount of students who were showing interest. Then was denied due to “not enough students taking interest.”
I believe that a journalism class would benefit many students who are fascinated in exploring career options related to English. English electives are well loved in this school, and adding a new one would give students more opportunities to explore their future before everything is costly. At UNH, a two credit course would cost $1,290. If we started the journalism class, a two credit course would be free. Wouldn’t you rather explore it by taking an elective in high school?
The Talon class could consist of writing articles, columns, or fun extra things for students to engage in like polls, riddles, etc. It also would provide knowledge on how newspapers are created and run in the real world. Even if this is beyond the budget, the class could even involve fundraising for an actual paper that students can physically hold.
