Three Shows on Netflix That Every Spanish Student Should Be Watching
Lucy Perkins
As a Spanish student, one of the best ways to improve upon your skills and perform better on assessments is to listen to the language being spoken. Unfortunately, most EHS students do not have the opportunity to interact with fluent speakers. However, watching TV shows in Spanish can provide a similarly beneficial experience. Watching Spanish TV can help you improve your pronunciation, broaden your vocabulary, and it's a great way to relax without being completely unproductive. Netflix has a wide variety of Spanish shows; these are the top three.
La Casa de las Flores (The House of Flowers)
Casa de Flores is a Netflix original dark comedy. The show follows the scandalous lives of the high-society de la Mora family after the patriarch’s double life is exposed by his mistress. As the family struggles internally and secrets are revealed, they are also fighting to maintain their spotless public image. The show is packed full of drama and will keep you clicking the “next episode” button for hours. There are currently three seasons ready to be binged on Netflix, but unfortunately there are no more on the way. If you love family drama and the lives of the rich and famous, this is the show for you.
Elite
Elite is a Netflix original mystery drama that unfolds along two different timelines. The show follows the conflict that ensues at a top-dollar private school when three middle-class students arrive on scholarship. The conflict eventually leads to the murder of one of the students, which viewers learn about in the first episode. The show then jumps back and forth between the time before and after the murder and slowly pieces together the crime. The show is very current, taking on the stigma behind HIV, religious discrimination, class disparities, and more. There are currently four seasons available on Netflix and a fifth has been greenlighted by Netflix. This is the perfect show for anyone who loves teen drama and murder mysteries.
Casa de Papel (Money Heist)
Casa de Papel is one of the best shows I have ever watched. The Netflix original series is a thriller drama about a skilled group of criminals that have banded together to pull off the greatest heist in history. The group is led by the mysterious “Profesor” and is composed of members identified by city names to ensure anonymity. The show is simultaneously an action-packed gun show and a show about friendship, comradery, and love. With twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat, an epic soundtrack and cinematography, and a few heartbreaking deaths, this show is definitely an emotional roller coaster. There are currently four full seasons on Netflix and the first half of the final season was just released. You will fall in love with every character and tiny detail of this show, and watching it will give you an adrenaline rush like you have never felt before. I highly recommend Casa de Papel to anyone, even those not studying the language.
Whether you are looking for a way to increase your fluency and your grades or you blew through every English show on Netflix during the lockdown, these shows are a great way to learn and stay entertained at the same time. So grab a bowl of popcorn, turn on the subtitles (or don’t if you’re up for the challenge), and start watching!
