Grade 11 and 12 Book Clubs in ELA
Instead of studying novels as a whole class, Grade 11 and 12 students were able to work more independently, developing their critical thinking and analytical skills.
Throughout the year, students in Grade 12 Literary focus have been studying novels in groups. They come to class prepared with passages marked with sticky notes to discuss with their group. So far, they've studied graphic novels (Maus, Persepolis, V for Vendetta), dystopian novels (A Handmaid's Tale, 1984, Brave New World) and now, the classics (Lord of the Flies, Catcher in the Rye).
In Grade 11, their semester finishes off with book club groups based on their choice of book. This year's choices: All Quiet on the Western Front, Fahrenheit 451, In Search of April Raintree, In the Heat of the Night, Animal Farm, The Hate U Give, and Perks of Being a Wallflower. Students prepared questions and found quotes to discuss at their meetings. Afterwards, they reflected on what they had learned through their discussions.
Brr! What a chilly return to school!
Although we missed a few days due to the cold, we made the most of our time together at school. Students enjoyed indoor recess and staying active inside. On January 9th, we went on our first field trip to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, where students listened to and observed a variety of musical instruments. We also spent some time at The Forks, giving students the chance to play and explore outdoors. Despite the cold temperatures, we continued to strengthen our writing skills by practicing how to add more details to our work and work on various math facts.
"The Totally Unbelievable Speaking Club (TUSC) is in full swing in Mme Aliane's classroom! The Grade 3/4 students are showing so much enthusiasm and creativity. They have been busy preparing and delivering fantastic presentations on various topics in both French and English. We are so proud of their hard work. Bravo!
Our school’s first ever JV basketball team ended the season with a victory on January 29! This co-op team, along with ECRB, had such a fun season full of growth and learning. We are so proud of them!” “La toute première équipe de basket-ball junior de notre école a terminé la saison par une victoire le 29 janvier ! Cette équipe coopérative, en collaboration avec l'ECRB, a connu une saison très agréable, riche en apprentissages et en progrès. Nous sommes très fiers d’eux!
