Last week, Kevin Stephenson, RRVSD's Indigenous Inclusion Teacher, joined our 10th-grade Geography class for a discussion on the forced relocation of the Sayisi Dene. This First Nation community was wrongly blamed for the declining caribou population in Northern Manitoba and, as a result, was forcibly displaced from their ancestral lands by the Canadian government in 1956. Together, we explored the historical, social and cultural impacts of this event, mapping out key locations and deepening our understanding of its lasting consequences
This week, Mme Nadine's grade 3/4 class was lucky enough to be able to try out Virtual Reality Headsets! We got to walk around different places on this planet, explore outer space, try out exciting roller coasters and play some pretty cool games like boxing. What an unforgettable experience! We also had our first TUSC meeting. TUSC stands for Totally Unbelievable Speaking Club. Students practice speeches to deliver in front of the class. Everyone did great for their first TUSC meeting!
Mme Kirsten’s grade ½ class has been hard at work during the month of January! The grade 2 students have been writing a step by step on how to build a snowman or make a hot chocolate. I’m amazed by the amount of details they added to their instructions! The grade 1 students have been learning how to write a complete sentence all while adding details such as “when and where”. Their ideas for their short stories amaze me every time!
In math, we have been learning lots of various math facts and we’ve also started exploring how to balance an equation. It can be a little tricky at times but they are always excited for a new challenge. We’ve also had the pleasure of having some visitors from grade 6 come to help us play some math games!
