ABSTRACT
While being both a full-time student and student-athlete, Shamya Butler was able to gain experience by combining her love for children and passion for social work while also strengthening her relationship with God in the process. She completed 200 hours interning at Hope House Detroit, a community center for kids. This non-profit organization was founded in 2010 by two people, husband and wife, who love their community and have a deep passion for encouraging the children and youth of Detroit. The motto at Hope House Detroit is “Walk together; talk together; play together; and pray together”. Shamya was a part of many different programs that Hope House offers including Read Around the Block, kid’s club, and girl’s club. These programs were all designed to nurture, connect, and encourage the community. As an intern, Shamya was able to build personal and professional connections with the staff and with the children that she worked with. In this presentation, she hopes to share her amazing experience at Hope House, with the aim of showcasing what a great place it was to complete her internship.
