ABSTRACT

Geiger Early Childhood Center is excited to create an outdoor learning adventure for their students. As research shows, children are spending more time indoors when they should be exploring play through playground equipment outdoors. According to the International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA), “when kids are involved in physical activity, they’re building stronger muscles and improving bone density, improving heart and lung function and preventing obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol,” (n.d.). There are many benefits to outdoor play such as socialization opportunities, healthy-living, and the opportunity to experiment with emotions. Children are able to use their imagination and take risks that they may not be able to do indoors. In building a new playground with new structures, the community will also be able to use the equipment when school is not in session. This will benefit not only the school children, but families of the community, as well.
