Military Deployment Resilience

Major: Psychology

Hometown: Macomb, MI

ABSTRACT

Military deployment resilience is directly affected by the effectiveness of deployment preparation by the member or family, deployment location, deployment duration and post- deployment. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a correlation between pre-deployment preparation and resilience throughout the deployment process. Resilience was measured by using a 15-item questionnaire. The first five questions gathered demographic information from the participants. The following ten questions were used to collect data on preparation priorities, unit participation and military experience. The hypothesis is that military members exhibited high levels of resilience during military deployments when targeted preparation was provided during pre-deployment, trans-deployment and post-deployment. Participants were members of the Air National Guard from a military installation in southeastern Michigan. All participants were 18 years of age or older who have deployed to hostile areas in either Northern Africa, the Middle East or the Korean peninsula.
