Technology to Teach

Major: Early Childhood Studies

Hometown: Wyandotte, MI

ABSTRACT

“Technology to Teach” by Melissa Lesko proposes a financial assistance program to provide an early childhood center with computers for each child in attendance. The early childhood center provides a developmentally appropriate, high quality learning environment for children ages 3-5 years old. The computers will be used during designated classroom time to enhance the children’s learning and prepare them for elementary school. The “Technology to Teach” program was created as an initiative to be in the same educational ranking as other centers in nearby communities, since many schools now use program software or applications to educate children instead of textbooks. This program will also be able to provide the proper technological accommodations for children with disabilities and dual language learners. The advantages this technology has on young children include introducing educational skills, spatial skills, problem solving skills, enhancing language comprehension, and providing helpful assistance tools. The educators will also benefit from this technology by allowing them to document and assess their students’ learning during activities. After all of the advantages were analyzed by the program director and center teachers, the director decided to apply for a grant to receive computers for each classroom in order to enhance the children’s learning on and off the screen.
