STEAM LAB

Major: Early Childhood Studies

Hometown: Detroit, MI

ABSTRACT

The grant proposal, STEAM Lab, would be used to purchase basic science, technology, engineering, art, and math materials for children in the preschool classrooms. Queen of Hearts Child Development Center services children and their families in the Northwest area of Detroit, Michigan. The integration of science, technology, engineering, art, and math concepts throughout early childhood classrooms promotes children’s development in all domains: cognitive, social, emotional, and physical (Mechler, 2015, p. 18). Providing exposure to these subjects can greatly improve growth and learning in children. The goal of the proposal is to increase the exposure of science, technology, engineering, art, and math through the use of a STEAM Lab. This lab will be used three times a week, giving each of the three preschool classrooms a day to explore the lab. Once a month, one of the preschool classrooms will present a parent night in which the preschoolers and their families will participate in a teacher planned activity. These activities will help preschoolers and their families gain knowledge in these subject areas. Activities that incorporate daily routines are opportunities for discovery, science, math, and family fun (Charlesworth, 2016, p. 404). From these early experiences with science and math, children can gain a love for these subjects. Having a math and science center within the preschool classroom will help spark the children’s interest in these field and teachers will evaluate the children’s development in these areas. By providing early subject exposure, children can gain a better chance at success in these subjects and in their educational future.
