Fine Arts Reaching Every Child

Major: Early Childhood Studies

Hometown: Clinton Township, MI

ABSTRACT

People who grow up in disadvantaged areas are less likely to have access to fine arts classes. Though some people like music, dancing, acting, and art, they are less likely to follow these passions because they cannot afford to. Children from disadvantaged areas are less likely to have these experiences. This proposal, Fine Arts Reaching Every Child, will help bring fine art experiences to the children served at Bright Stars Early Learning Center. Bright Stars Early Learning Center is located in Detroit where there is an extremely high poverty rate. What this means is that most families can barely afford to make ends meet and most do not have the extra income needed to afford things such as private dance, music, theatre, or art lessons. Because of this, the children miss out on opportunities to explore those arts. Fine Arts Reaching Every Child was designed to ensure that every child in the program has an experience with fine arts including music, dancing, art, theatre, and literature so that their artistic talents can be nurtured. The funds will be used to introduce these programs into the curriculum as well as have a showcase of talent for the community. Fine Arts Reaching Every Child will give children and families in the community opportunities to find what they are interested in. Fine Arts Reaching Every Child will help children who are at-risk stay involved in the arts that they may not have gotten a chance to otherwise experience.
