How to Save a Life: Recognizing and Intervening in Suicidal INDIVIDUALS

Major: Nursing

Hometown: Freeland, MI

ABSTRACT

Background: In 2019 an estimated 1.38 million suicides were attempted. This overwhelming statistic can be decreased significantly through the use of evaluation tools and post-evaluation interventions. Research has shown that through the utilization of the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ) as well as post interventions such as appropriate referrals, psychotherapy, support groups and increasing physical activity this devastating number can be significantly decreased.

Objectives: The purpose of this evidence-based practice presentation is to conclude the effect of an educational teaching module to Emergency Department (ED) nurses on the SIQ and psychotherapy, support groups, and increasing physical activity once suicide risk is deemed.

Methods: Data collection contains a 6-question survey. The survey will determine nurses’ knowledge before and after an educational presentation. An educational poster presentation includes information on administering the SIQ, psychotherapy, support groups and increasing physical activities success rates in high suicide risk patients.

Results: The primary outcome following the educational module is increased nurses’ knowledge on the prevalence of suicide and the implementation of the SIQ. The secondary outcome is an increase in the use of the SIQ in the ED.

Conclusion: Research has shown that the SIQ is successful in evaluating the risk for suicide. Following up with education for high-risk patients on interventions to decrease this risk is successful in decreasing suicide rates in high risk patients.

Key Words: Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire, suicide, psychotherapy, support groups, physical activity
