RACIAL STEREOTYPES IN ALL AMERICAN

Major: Mass Communication

Hometown: Chesterfield, MI

ABSTRACT

This case study will analyze the portrayal of racial stereotypes in a specific scene shown on the Netflix TV drama, All American. The case study will focus on the dialogue between two teenagers (one who is African American and the other who is bi-racial) who were arrested by two Caucasian police officers and how at a young age African Americans must face and react to police profiling. Using the Potter Box, which is a four-step decision-making model that uses the facts, values, principles and loyalties of a media issue to help analyze and discuss the ethics in a specific case study, this case study will prove how All American takes an ethical approach by talking about and showing racial stereotypes as teachable moments to not only the African American teenagers but to the viewers as well.
