Field practicum experience is a primary component of social work education, which provides opportunities for the continued development and strengthening of abilities related to the social work profession. Such experience gives students the ability to direct people toward systems that provide them with resources, services, and opportunities. The following presentation brings insight to the social work practice experience at Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) located in Oakland County, Michigan under the program of Children’s Protective Services (CPS). Rochester University’s social work student Kelsey Seawright shares her experience as an intern for Oakland County CPS where there is a responsibility for investigating allegations of child abuse and neglect. CPS interns are properly trained to complete referrals for services, shadow court hearings, participate in interviewing clients, assist with purchase orders for cribs and car seats, drive a state car, and assist with filing and other administrative duties.
