Professional and personal characteristics require that student teachers are skilled in planning, prepared for each day’s lessons and they are able to provide quality instruction in a positive classroom environment. One of the things that Hannah's mentor teacher wrote about her was, “She is constantly seeking advice and searching for ways to help her students learn. She is a true lifelong learner, and because of that, she is an awesome teacher! She is simply amazing and she has the very heart that is needed for this profession. Keep loving your students; they see that in your teaching.” This is true of our honoree. Hannah exhibits the qualities that the next generation of teachers will need to be successful in the classroom. It is a pleasure to honor Hannah with the Outstanding Teacher Education Graduate Award for 2020.
The Teacher Education Department chose John Oddo as one of the recipients of the Outstanding Teacher Education Graduate Award for the 2019-2020 academic year because of the excellence he exhibited in both his general education student teaching and his special education student teaching. John was one of the first two students to major in Learning Disabilities at Rochester University. This willingness to pursue a new major is a good example of what John’s mentor teacher, Mrs. Tina Gurganus, describes as John’s willingness to accept challenges. Mrs. Gurganus also noted John’s openness and his understanding of the importance of building relationships with his students. When John began his student teaching in learning disabilities, he was able to adjust to a different style of delivery of services and to learn to value making data-based decisions for instructing students. Again, his mentor teacher noted his efforts to maintain positive relationships with his students. John has demonstrated an energy and compassion for the students he teaches and a willingness to learn the best ways to work with students and his co-workers.
