ABSTRACT
“How Many Now” by Victoria Slack documents the progress of students learning through the use of assessments. The initiative allowed Slack to determine the different academic levels of students, develop effective lessons and activities to keep students engaged to improve their learning, and show student growth. The project began with a pre-assessment worksheet to determine the different levels of understanding before entering into a mathematics unit of adding and subtracting fluently within five. After reviewing the pre-assessment, lessons and activities were created based on the student’s ability. The pre-assessment showed what information the students have comprehended and what information needs to be addressed or reviewed. Throughout the unit, multiple forms of assessments such as formative, summative, and informal assessments were used to adjust lessons to meet the needs of all the different learners. At the end of the unit, a post-assessment was given to determine if Slack’s lessons and instruction were effective. Based on the comparison between the pre and post-assessment, results showed the lessons and activities impacted the students’ performances and showed growth overall.
