ABSTRACT
When the word coach comes to mind, many people think of an individual that shouts orders and makes athletes run for any type of infraction or misstep. However, the essence of coaching is expressed in service and leadership. Utilizing a coaching leadership style, along with a servant leadership concept, has been an effective model for successful corporations and organizations, as well as professional and collegiate football programs. In servant leadership, the focus is placed on those persons that the coach has under their leadership. Robert Greenleaf’s servant leadership theory states that the leader shares power with and has concern for the welfare and development of those that are their tutelage. This literature review will consider the main concepts of servant leadership, coaching theory, and the integration of servant leadership concepts with coaching behaviors to bring about better team effectiveness and collaboration.
