Making Musical Minds will establish an enriched learning environment to prepare the 110 at-risk children enrolled at Loving Hearts Learning Center to be school ready by the time they enter Kindergarten. Statistically proven, the lack of resources provided for at-risk children effect their preparedness for entering school. Research indicates that by participating in musical activities, students learn social skills by playing with each other and taking turns, language skills by listening and responding to others, physical skills by using gross and fine motor skills, along with balancing skills and literacy skills in the form of alliteration and rhyming. Through Making Musical Minds, students will gain exposure to different musical styles through listening, moving and creating. Through listening activities, students will learn components of music including tone, pitch, beat, rhythm and melody. Through moving activities, students will develop an awareness of contrasting musical elements of time, space and energy. Through creative activities, students will experiment with musical instruments to become familiar with their uses. Students will explore multi-cultural music selections including classical, jazz, Native American, African, marches, and folk. Students will demonstrate the skills they acquired throughout the year by performing a year-end concert celebration.
