ABSTRACT
Academic Avengers is an after-school tutoring program that is based in an at-risk community to help children grades K-5 who are struggling to be at grade level in Math and English Language Arts. This proposal will document that the children in low-income communities usually don’t have the extra tools that are essential to their success. This program came about when Detroit Public School released information that the state of Michigan spent 80 million dollars to improve early reading, and test scores went down on the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress Assessment (M-Step). The proposed program would focus on assisting children whose families cannot afford tutoring programs to help their children succeed in the areas of language arts and math. Academic Avengers will be based on the child’s academic records, which will include current and previous report cards, M-Step scores and recommendation from math and English language arts teachers. The proposed amount for this program to start up would be $25,000 is requested to meet the need for the resources to be provided for the programs start up needs. These funds will not only assist with offering tutoring throughout the weekday, but also provide a safe place for children to study, and a computer lab with printers for the children that may have no access to internet and computer service will be supplied. This program will promote great learning, higher grades and better ability to accomplish tasks for the children who are enrolled.
