More than 300 million peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) are sold annually in the United States and about 80% of all hospitalized patients receive some sort of infusion therapy. Furthermore, PIVCs account for 38% of catheter-associated bloodstream infections, which are preventable. An extensive literature review was initiated to research this gap in practice.
The purpose of this evidence-based practice presentation is to educate a convenient sample of nurses on the progressive care unit about proper PIVC insertion and maintenance using the PIV5Rights bundle and educational approach. The PIV5Rights bundle is a five-step intervention that includes the right proficiency, right insertion, right vein and catheter, right supplies and technologies, and daily assessments with photo accountability.
The pre- and post-questionnaire is to assess nurses’ baseline level of knowledge and post intervention level of knowledge about PIVC insertion and maintenance. A poster presentation is used as an educational platform that coaches nurses about areas to avoid with PIVC insertion, best areas for insertion, dressing changes, dwell time, IV line care, signs and symptoms of phlebitis and infiltration, and the PIV5Rights bundle. Following the educational intervention, the post-questionnaire is distributed to reassess nurses’ knowledge.
The primary outcome following the educational intervention is an increase in nurses’ level of knowledge. The secondary outcome is improved PIVC insertion, dwell time, patient outcomes and satisfaction, while reducing PIVC failure rates and hospital costs. Continuous education should be provided to nurses about evidence-based practice PIVC insertion and maintenance to increase their knowledge and competency.
