독일인 신학자 발터 바우어(Walter Bauer)는 1928년에 그전에 출간된 Erwin Preuschen의 그리스어-독일어 신약 그리스어 사전을 개정하여 1928년에 개정판을 낸 이후로, 정기적으로 개정이 이루어졌다. 영어권에서는 1957년에 최초로 바우어의 사전을 번역한 영어판이 출간되었고, 1979년에 2판 개정판(BAGD)이 출간되었다. 현재의 제3판 개정판은 1988년에 출간된 바우어의 6판 독일어 개정판(일명 BAAR; 『바우어 헬라어 사전』, 생명의 말씀사, 2017)과 기존의 영역판을 토대로 독일어판에는 없는 더 자세한 뜻풀이와 용례를 제공해서 신약 성경과 초기 기독교 문헌을 더 정확하게 이해할 수 있는 유용한 렉시콘이다.

오래전부터 만연하던 불법 복사본의 유통을 근절하고자 KCBS에서 시카고대학교출판부로부터 정식으로 저작권 계약을 하고 한국에서 영어판 정품 복사본을 출간한 지 20년이 넘었고, 그 사이에 4,500부가 넘게 판매되었다. 이제는 전자책과 온라인 자료가 넘치는 세상이 되었지만, 종이책 사전을 여전히 필요로 하는 한국 내 학습자를 위하여 고가의 원서 대신 저렴한 대안을 제공하고자 복간한다. 2002년 처음 복사본을 출간할 때는 종이책을 복사해서 마스터로 제작했지만, 이번에는 PDF 파일을 정식으로 제공받아 원서의 품질에 비슷한 책으로 만들었다. 전 세계에서 유일하게 정식 저작권 허락을 받은 이 영문 리프린트 판은 대한민국 내에서만 판매가 가능하고, 그 외 지역에서는 판매가 허용되지 않는다. Described as an "invaluable reference work" (Classical Philology) and "a tool indispensable for the study of early Christian literature" (Religious Studies Review) in its previous edition, this new updated American edition of Walter Bauer's Wörterbuch zu den Schriften des Neuen Testaments builds on its predecessor's staggering deposit of extraordinary erudition relating to Greek literature from all periods. Including entries for many more words, the new edition also lists more than 25,000 additional references to classical, intertestamental, Early Christian, and modern literature.
In this edition, Frederick W. Danker's broad knowledge of Greco-Roman literature, as well as papyri and epigraphs, provides a more panoramic view of the world of Jesus and the New Testament. Danker has also introduced a more consistent mode of reference citation, and has provided a composite list of abbreviations to facilitate easy access to this wealth of information.
Perhaps the single most important lexical innovation of Danker's edition is its inclusion of extended definitions for Greek terms. For instance, a key meaning of "episkopos" was defined in the second American edition as overseer; Danker defines it as "one who has the responsibility of safeguarding or seeing to it that something is done in the correct way, guardian." Such extended definitions give a fuller sense of the word in question, which will help avoid both anachronisms and confusion among users of the lexicon who may not be native speakers of English.
Danker's edition of Bauer's Wörterbuch will be an indispensable guide for Biblical and classical scholars, ministers, seminarians, and translators.

저자 소개

편저자 프레드릭 윌리엄 댕커 Frederick William Danker (1920-2012)

댕커는 미국 콩코디아 신학교(B.D.)를 졸업했고, 시카고 대학교에서 고전학을 연구하였다(Ph.D.). 이후 시카고 소재 루터 신학교에서 신약학을 가르치다가 명예교수로 퇴임했다. 그는 고전 문헌학을 연구하는 데 중요한 Benefactor 같은 1차 문헌 자료집이나 성서학 연구에 도움이 되는 Multipurpose Tools for Bible Study 같은 책을 집필하기도 했으나, 생애 대부분을 사전 편찬에 힘썼다. 2000년에 A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature, 제3판(BDAG)을 편찬한 후, 2009년에는 The Concise Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament라는 짧은 그리스어-영어 사전을 집필하였다(한국어판: 『신약성서 그리스어 사전』, 새물결플러스, 2017).
