ELA Connections: First grade students read informational text to collect information that would help build a boat that would not sink under cargo pressure.
As part of their writing, students made a list of their materials and then orally presented the sequence of how they built their boat to be successful and the
results during each trial. The following are examples of the texts that helped us with this project:
"Things that Float and Things That Don't" by David Adler. Why is it that a piece of metal doesn't float but a huge ship made of steel does? In this text, we found answers to questions about density and flotation.
"Choose to Reuse" by Lisa Bullard. We all throw away too much stuff! We read about ways we can use old things to make something new.
"What Floats-What Sinks" by Jennifer Boothroid. This text explored what sinks and what doesn't, as well as density of solids, liquids and gases.
