Science:
5th graders explored human impact on the natural environment through invasive species. Student investigated how energy and matter flows and changes in a food chain, then a food web. They made predictions and investigated the affects of non-native species on an ecosystem and finally did a virtual survey and wrote claims recommending which site along the Connecticut coast should be surveyed more often for invasive Orange Sea Squirts.
Students organizing and mapping the flow of energy and matter through 2 Connecticut Coast ecosystems. The black arrows show the flow through the native ecosystem and the purple arrows show the affects of the non-native Orange Sea Squirt.

Math:
Our first unit this quarter was Fractions as Quotients and Fraction Multiplication. This entailed discovery and learning about how fractions are the answers to division problems and fractions themselves are division.
How are division and fractions related?
How do multiplication and division relate to fractions?
How do we solve fraction multiplication problems using models?
For our second unit we dove deeper into Fraction Multiplication and Division.
How do we multiply fractions numerically?
How are fraction multiplication and area related?
How do we divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions?
How do we solve fraction multiplication and division problems?
