Q2: How can we minimize the effects of weathering and erosion on our society?

Science

4th graders learned how wind, water, and gravity play a part in changing the surface of the Earth as well as ways to slow down an minimize these effects. They then designed an erosion prevention plan to meet the needs of an imaginary client of their choice and tested their plans to gather data on there effectiveness.

Erosion Prevention Plan

In this project, the students researched weathering and erosion examples and identified similarities and differences to distinguish between weathering and erosion. They then created a model of a landform of their choice that they used as the basis for your erosion prevention plan. Finally, they presented their erosion prevention plan as a slideshow or report.

Through these projects the students were able to:

1.) identify evidence from patterns in rock formations to support an explanation for changes in a landscape over time.

2.) make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effect of weathering or the rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation.

3.) Analyze and interpret data from maps to describe patterns of Earth's features.

Opinion Writing on Beach Re-Nourishment

The students read two opinion pieces on the same topic (Beach Re-Nourishment): one pro, one con. They identified the claims and supporting evidence in each article. Then, they created a slideshow/poster that displays each opinion and the evidence used to support it. After analyzing the claims/evidence in the articles, they chose their position on the topic and completed their own claim/evidence organizer with evidence from the article and personal own experiences that support their position. Finally, they wrote a blog post expressing their opinion about the topic.

Whole Number Multiplication & Division

Students worked throughout this unit using hands-on techniques, in learning how to multiply and divide in a variety of formats to give them the mathematical tools to help construct their science erosion plans and landforms.

Through this unit the students worked on:

1. Multiplying by 1- and 2-digit numbers

2. Writing and solving multiplication equations.

3. Finding whole-number quotients and remainders.

4. Writing and solving division equations.
