Learning Outcomes impacts many tools in Brightspace. Before you start setting up your course to use learning outcomes, review the introductory and setup content to understand the core concepts of Learning Outcomes and Competencies.
In your course, select "Course Admin" from the blue navigtion bar
Select "Learning Outcomes"
Click "Add Outcome"
Enter a Short Code (ex: 1.1, PLO 8.1, etc.) and the Outcome information (description of the outcome)
Click "Save" when done
From there, the new Outcome will be available for you to attach to your activities. You can also add a Sub-Outcome by doing the following:
Next to your Outcome, select the 3 dots (...)
Click "Add Sub-Outcome"
Enter a Short Code and the Outcome information
Click "Save" when done
After that, the overall Outcome will become a Parent Outcome and will house all Sub-Outcome assessments. This is helpful if you want to have multiple Outcomes count toward a main Outcome.
In your course, select "Course Admin" from the blue navigtion bar
Select "Learning Outcomes"
Click "Import"
Select "Import From File"
Drag and drop, or select "Select a CSV file to import" to find and select your file to be imported
Click "Import" when done
From there, your file will process and the Outcomes will be added to your course. Please note that you must save your file as a CSV for the import to work. You can create a CSV file by using the sample CSV file attached to the Import window. Simply click on the download link, open the file in Excel, remove the sample information, add your Outcomes and Sub-Outcomes, and click "Save".
In your course, select "Course Admin" from the blue navigtion bar
Click "Import from Outcome Set"
Choose the Outcome Set you wish to import Outcomes from in the Outcome Set dropdown menu
Select the checkboxes next to the Outcomes and/or Sub-Outcomes you wish to import
Once all are selected, click "Import"
From there, the selected Outcomes and/or Sub-Outcomes will be available in your course. Please note that you can repeat these steps to import more Outcomes and/or Sub-Outcomes from the same or different Outcome Sets.
In your course, go to "More Tools" and then "Assignments" in the blue navigation bar at the top of the page
Select the down arrow next to the Assignment you wish to add Outcomes to
Click "Edit Folder"
Under the Title field, select "Outcomes"
Select the checkbox next to the Outcomes you wish to attach to the Assignment and click "Save"
Click "Save and Close" when done
In your course, go to "More Tools" and then "Discussions" in the blue navigation bar at the top of the page
Select the down arrow next to the Discussion Topic you wish to add Outcomes to
Click "Edit Topic"
Under the Title field, select "Outcomes"
Select the checkbox next to the Outcomes you wish to attach to the Discussion Topic and click "Save"
Click "Save and Close" when done
In your course, go to "More Tools" and then "Quizzes" in the blue navigation bar at the top of the page
Select the Quiz you wish to add Outcomes to
Scroll down to the Questions area
Select the checkbox next to each question you wish to align to your Outcomes
Note: If you wish to align different outcomes to different questions, only choose one question at a time
Select the checkbox next to the Outcomes you wish to attach to the Questions and click "Save"
Click "Save and Close" when done
In your course, go to "More Tools" and then "Rubrics" in the blue navigation bar at the top of the page
Select the down arrow next to the Rubric you wish to add Outcomes to
Click "Edit"
Under the Criterion field, select "Outcomes"
Select the checkbox next to the Outcomes you wish to attach to the Rubric Criterion and click "Save"
Click "Close" when done
In your course, select "Course Admin" from the blue navigation bar at the top of the page
Click on "Learning Outcomes"
Select "Settings" in the top right of the page
Click on the radio button next to the Assessment Scale that you wish to use
Once selected, you may use that Assessment Scale to assess your course's Learning Outcomes
Note, you can only use one Assessment Scale at a time to assess learners in your course.
Access a learner's submission and locate the Outcomes section on the assessment panel to the right
Select the appropriate Assessment Scale level to assess the learner's submission
Click "Publish" when done
Access the learner's Discussion Post and locate the Outcomes section on the assessment panel to the right
Select the appropriate Assessment Scale level to assess the learner's submission
Click "Publish" when done
Access the learner's Quiz Attempt and locate the question aligned with your course's Learning Outcomes
Select the appropriate Assessment Scale level to assess the learner's question attempt
Click "Publish" when done
Assess the learner's work where you attached the rubric with aligned Outcomes
Select the appropriate rubric levels for the learner's work
Yes, simply go back to their assessment, change the Outcome level, and click "Publish".
Yes, you can go back to any activity, add, and assess a Learning Outcome.
Yes, you can remove manually created or shared Outcomes from your course by doing the following:
Go to Course Admin and select "Learning Outcomes"
Find the Outcome and/or Sub-Outcome you wish to remove, and click the 3 dots to the right of it
Select Remove
If you remove a Parent Outcome (has Sub-Outcomes), it will remove both the Outcome and all Sub-Outcomes. Please note that if you have assessed learners with an Outcome/Sub-Outcome you wish to remove, it will remove the Outcome assessment for your learners.
