The week of October 24th-31st was Red Ribbon Week at MMS. Red Ribbon Week is a week dedicated to ensuring that we have a drug-free life. There were red ribbons hung up all over the school. Each day of the week had its own theme. Students and staff were encouraged to dress up according to the theme.
The week started off with no school on Monday, but on Tuesday, the theme was to wear red. Seventh-grade P2P Peer Leaders visited study hall classes to count how many students wore red. In each grade, the team who wore the most red got red candy on Halloween! On Wednesday, Mustangs wore neon, striving to be “too bright for drugs.” Everyone was encouraged to wear colorful and bright colors. On Thursday, it was 80s Day, and Mustangs aimed to “put drugs in the past.” Friday was Pajama Day, as members of the school “put drugs to sleep.” Finally, on Monday, students and teachers wore their Halloween costumes to school to say “‘boo’ to drugs.”
To get into the spooky spirit, MMS teachers and staff members participated in a costume competition, where students voted for a group of teachers judging by their favorite costumes. All of the groups had amazing costumes! However, the winners of the contest were Mr. Mele and Mr. VanBrunt, both seventh-grade science teachers, who were dressed up as each other. This was an enjoyable and fun activity for both teachers and students. We hope to continue it next year!
These activities were a great experience for everyone because it was a way to have fun and take your mind off of school or work for some time. It was something we could look forward to, as the teachers excitedly planned out their costumes weeks in advance.
Red Ribbon Week and Halloween at MMS are fun-filled times of school spirit. They brought many laughs and smiles. We hope to continue these traditions in the future, and see more students and teachers participate!
