A Place to Love

Millburn Middle School has many resources available to its students, such as the library. The school library is located on the third floor of the school, and many argue that it is one of the most valuable assets available. Students of every grade level flock to the library before school, after school, and during study hall to take advantage of the materials.
The library at Millburn Middle School has continued to evolve with its students since its founding. It has continued to supply books, ebooks, audiobooks, and more to its students since 1930. The library has been renovated many times and was most recently renovated in 2021. The library has also seen detrimental storms, requiring the library staff to take down all books from the shelves. The library has persevered for many years and has been a place for students to express their curiosity towards learning. Throughout the many changes that have been made to the library, including the discontinuation of a wood-burning fireplace, the Millburn Middle School Library remains a resource for students to express their love for literature.
With vast genre choices, the library is taking on a large project of “genre-fying” the shelves. Although the changes will take about a year, this large project will shift the organization system from alphabetical to the genre that the book falls under, such as historical fiction or romance.
The library offers many programs for all students, including the library squad. The squad was founded by Mrs. Ipp, the previous librarian. After students attend one after-school training session, they can volunteer at the library once per week. The group’s work involves re-organizing bookshelves, checking out different novels for readers, and helping Mr. Gross with decorating the library.
Mr. Gross, the school library media specialist, never begrudges anybody’s request to find a good book. He explains the benefits of having a library by saying, “I think that having a school library gives all access to books. Not everyone has access to books in their house and not everyone can afford them, so having all books in one place gives everybody equal access to books.”
Students of Millburn Middle School also take pride in their school library. When asked why they liked the library, 8th grader Sophie Phillips said, “It provides a productive place for students to study, and gives students easy access to the books they need for class.”
Mr. Gross also recommends checking out his website, which contains information varying from Study Hall availability to online resources open for use. Take a look at the MMS Library Website here!
Additionally, the library doubles as a tech center for those who need help with their Chromebooks. Mrs. Natuzzi, the technology facilitator, aids students with varying technological difficulties.
Today, almost every student visits the library one way or another, reflecting its significance in MMS students' daily lives.
