Peer Leader Spotlight: WELL

We all want to have peace in our lives. Whether that comes in the form of warm bubble baths on Friday, or spreading kindness, the idea of tranquility is versatile. When it comes to school culture, and how we integrate a peaceful and safe environment, WELL Peer Leaders, also known as Wellness Enhances Living & Learning, make it their mission to incorporate these traits into our daily lives. With a hectic schedule, after-school activities, and Netflix dramas of our own, it can be hard to take a break once in a while.
In the attempts to create the first of many in-school breaks, WELL Peer Leaders recently hosted their initial project, allowing students to write positive messages on cardboard paper, socialize with friends, and even make friendly fortune tellers. This event took place on October 11th during both Study Hall A and B in the Makerspace. Although these activities are open to all students, a landslide of students were 6th graders, participating in the latter time slot. This event, and many others in the future, is a key component of wellness. From physical and mental to social and emotional, the WELL Peer Leaders plan to indulge in different aspects of health throughout the year.
According to Rian C., a WELL Peer Leader, “These activities are designed to get kids’ mind off of things, and, in a way, help them concentrate more on their school work and reduce [stress levels.]” Over the years, WELL has hosted a variety of events, most popularly, therapy dogs. With these projects, MMS’s wellness-makers are not only promoting a safe environment for peers but also encouraging a positive school climate. School climate can have an astronomical impact on students, and the way they’re able to learn and grow in an academic environment.
One good day can have the chance to ripple into the next, and then the next! This ripple effect, as daunting as it seems, is something we go through every day. From stepping in a muddy puddle and ruining your new kicks to being complimented in the hallway, every action has an effect on your, and your peers’ futures. WELL’s goal is to aim this pattern into the positive. With one kind action, choice, and word at a time.
