Dialogue Night-2023
by Zainab Tehami and Chloe Woo
25th January, 2023
The pandemic resulted in the famous “Dialogue Night” losing meaning in our school. What even happens there? What do we “dialogue” about? Is it mandatory to attend?
In past years, the tradition of having Dialogue Night twice a year continued without fault. But thanks to COVID-19 and school closings, we have had a gap in this MMS custom. Although the past few Dialogue Nights were done virtually, the peer leaders still managed to bring the school community together even under unusual circumstances because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as the peer leaders of this year hope to do.
DIALOGUE NIGHT 1
Earlier this year on November 17th, 2022 students and parents gathered to discuss stress. It was, indeed, a very broad topic, but each discussion group had the opportunity to dive into the specifics, such as the causes and effects of stress. As the school’s first in-person Dialogue Night in four years, the event went very well for staff, parents, students, and of course, the WELL and Core 8 peer leaders leading the discussion. The peer leaders and advisors were able to go through the process of the first Dialogue Night to see what works and what doesn’t for improvements to be made for future Dialogue Nights. We hope this will be even more of a success with the feedback of those involved.
DIALOGUE NIGHT 2
The title for this year’s Dialogue Night is What We Don’t See and Say: Conversation Between Generations. A Family-Feud-type activity is presented to uncover the truth from both our parents and the students in our school to answer questions such as: What do we actually know about each other? Everyone will have a chance to voice their opinions on the various topics presented and are encouraged to continue the conversation with their parents at home. Will the students really be open with their parents to discuss seemingly harmless questions like “What areas of your life do you think that your parents have a lot of say in?” We shall find out on February 16th, 2023.
