In 2022, we got addicted to Wordle, watched hit movies in theaters, and made a song from the 80s pop again, thanks to the Netflix series: Stranger Things. This is 2022 in review.
Last year, several artists set musical records. Beyoncé broke the record for the most Grammy nominations by a female artist, and passionate Taylor Swift fans started a class-action lawsuit against Ticketmaster for ticket fraud during presales for the Grammy-award-winning artist’s upcoming tour, Eras. El conejo malo, Bad Bunny, became the most streamed artist on Spotify for the third consecutive year, while Queen B dropped her new album, Renaissance, over the summer.
In addition, several blockbuster movies dropped, enticing fans to return to theaters. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Nope, and Top Gun: Maverick are just a few of the hit movies released last year. At the Oscars, we watched Will Smith stride onstage to smack Chris Rock across the face after an insensitive joke, which sadly made more news than the ongoing war in Ukraine.
In a highly controversial move, Elon Musk entered the Twitter headquarters with a sink, firing many employees and losing a ton of money. After the New York Times purchased Wordle from its creator, it became the most popular Google search, with millions of daily players.
Fans of the Netflix sensation Stranger Things will have heard the song “Running Up That Hill,” which has found many Gen Z fans and has been played countless times. BeReal, the social media app where you have two minutes to post a picture of whatever you’re doing at a random time every day, became a thing in 2022, with many unflattering selfies posted daily. Fans of soccer, or fútbol, will have tuned in to the World Cup in Qatar. We watched Messi and Mbappé fight for the win during penalty kicks and were disappointed when some matches ended with a score of 0-0.
In 2022, we hit a total population of 8 billion. However, our world is persevering past all its losses this year, including the beloved Queen Elizabeth. On a more positive note, scientists have been working hard to overcome the recent COVID-19 pandemic, and their efforts have paid off, as they have removed the COVID-19 restrictions.
2022 was a year to remember whether you’re a fan of sports, books, music, or movies. Hopefully, 2023 will be even better with more records set and more history made. Happy New Year!
