Maverick
By: Sia Bagul
It was a dark, stormy night, and Maverick was galloping around his home, Millburn Middle School. When Maverick walked up the steps, the door was locked.
“Let me in!”, Maverick exclaimed.
The door creaked open, “Only if you dare…”, a mysterious voice responded.
Maverick shrugged.
CLIP CLOP CLIP CLOP! Maverick's hooves banged against the floor, but the entry was blocked by metal bars with a keyhole. A floating binder suddenly flew in front of his face.
Determined Maverick yelled, “Catch me if you can!” Maverick saw a silver key glimmering in the binder's hook. He chased the elusive binder and finally grabbed the key. “Yes!” Maverick placed the key into the keyhole, and the door opened with a click.
Pencils grabbed at his hair, and a ghost appeared out of nowhere. “Welcome to your doom, hahaha!”
So that's who that ominous voice was, Maverick thought to himself. Maverick ran across the building, and a bright red apple floated in front of him. As Maverick was very hungry, he took a bite. Maverick’s skin started to itch and turn red. The apple was poisonous! Oh no!
More school supplies came to attack him. Notebooks, pens, and highlighters of all kinds chased him every gallop he took. Maverick ran across the building and finally found a back door and slipped in. With a sigh of relief, he collapsed onto a fluffy couch and munched on a bar of chocolate. What a chaotic night it was, and Maverick enjoyed the Halloween adventure!
The Passageway of Ghosts
By: Kyna Mahadkar
It was the day before Halloween when Raven decided to go to the library for her study hall. She couldn’t wait to go trick-or-treating with her friends. The thought of eating Sour Patch KKids and Kit Kats made her mouth water. When she reached the library, the thunder seemed to boom louder, and the rain fell heavily. The flickering lights made Raven a little uneasy.
The librarian waved to her, then went to the back to check on some books. “Tell me when you are ready to check out,” she called out.
Raven went to a bookshelf in the back and picked out a mystery book. Suddenly, the bookshelf swung open with a creak, revealing a passageway. Raven gulped, feeling nervous as she stepped in.
The passageway was decorated with purple and orange string lights, and she could hear laughter coming from inside. She tiptoed in and saw a room filled with worn, cozy armchairs and Halloween candy. All around were ghosts!
Shocked, Raven spun around, breathing nervously. Then, a friendly voice rang out, “Don’t be afraid, this is where we ghosts hang out before Halloween. We usually don’t invite humans, but you can join us if you want.”
Raven hesitantly walked to the big, comfy brown couch and sank in. She soon warmed up to the friendly spirits and listened to their stories about old times at the school. One ghost even remembered when it was founded!
At last, it was the end of the study hall, and Raven said goodbye, promising to come back next Halloween. She picked up another mystery book to read and checked it out.
“Found anything interesting?” asked the friendly librarian.
“Yes, very,” replied Raven with a smile.
