French IV courses focus on advancing students’ skills and abilities to read, write, speak, and understand the French language so that they can maintain simple conversations with sufficient vocabulary and an acceptable accent, have sufficient comprehension to understand speech spoken at a normal pace, read uncomplicated but authentic prose, and write narratives that indicate a good understanding of grammar and a strong vocabulary.
French V courses extend students’ facility with the language so that they are able to understand, initiate, and sustain general conversations on topics beyond basic survival needs. Reading and writing tasks will usually include all normal verb tenses (present, past, and future).
Designed to parallel third-year college-level courses in French Composition and Conversation, AP French Language courses build upon prior knowledge and develop students’ ability to understand others and express themselves (in French) accurately, coherently, and fluently. Students will develop a vocabulary large enough to understand literary texts, magazine/newspaper articles, films and television productions, and so on.
Upper level French classes build on the foundation created in the lower levels and focus on using a large variety of vocabulary and tenses to interact with authentic French articles, videos, and other resources. Since these courses are often combined, the class generally follows the themes of AP French concentrating on current events. Topics covered rotate from year, but include:
Families in different societies
Influences of language and culture on identity
Influences of beauty and art
How science and technology affect our life
Factors that affect quality of life
Environmental, societal and political challenges
Current events (like the World Cup in 2022!)
Learning about the French-speaking world through music, including giving our opinions and expressing why we like certain music and finding more French musicians to listen to in class.
Students are expected to speak, read, write, and understand spoken French at an advanced level. Repetition is key to learning a language, so we practice in class, play games, and participate in communicative activities that let students build their confidence using the language. In addition to vocabulary and grammar, we learn about the customs and culture of France and the entire French-speaking world as they relate to our topic. A focus for all levels of French is current events and popular music. French is the fifth most-widely spoken language and growing! Get in on the fun by learning French next year!
French 4 Honors/French 5 and AP French cover the same content, but AP students are asked to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the French language in addition to preparing for the AP Exam in May.
Two more things to know about upper level
Students in French 4/5/AP have the opportunity to earn 6 credits through Arapahoe Community College and concurrent enrollment. This course will be the equivalent of FRE 2011 and FRE 2012 (3 credits each semester) which are guaranteed transfer courses. This is a free program for students who take class with Madame Z at Columbine HS.
Students in French 4 and above will have the opportunity to take the AAPPL test for the Seal of Biliteracy in April. The Seal of Biliteracy is earned by students who can demonstrate adequate interpersonal communication skills (spontaneous speaking and listening.) The Seal of Biliteracy looks great on college and job applications!
