Designed to introduce students to Spanish language and culture, Spanish I courses emphasize basic grammar and syntax, simple vocabulary, and the spoken accent so that students can read, write, speak, and understand the language at a basic level within predictable areas of need, using customary courtesies and conventions. Spanish culture is introduced through the art, literature, customs, and history of Spanish-speaking people.

Spanish 1 starts with basic words and phrases such as greeting and farewells, numbers, telling time, days, months, weather and polite expressions. Students progress by learning to express their likes and dislikes for various activities and describing their physical and personality traits. They will conclude the first semester by learning vocabulary for classes and school life. During the second semester students will learn vocabulary for meals with expressing oneself while dining out as a goal. Next, students will learn how to express which locations they frequent in the community along with leisure time activities. Finally students will learn to describe the members of their family and talk about what activities they do with their families.

Students are expected to speak, read, write, and understand spoken Spanish at a beginner level.  Repetition is key to learning a language, so we practice in class, play games, and participate in activities that allow students to learn the language.

If you speak Spanish at home or understand spoken Spanish, check out our new course for 2023-24, Spanish for Heritage Speakers.
