This course examines a particular topic in U.S. History, such as particular time periods in the history of the United States, or they may focus on the history of particular U.S. regions rather than provide an overview of the subject.
Specifically, this class will explore the history of American social movements as expressed and reflected in music. Students investigate the crossroads of social movements and music by studying historical themes such as: uprisings and rebellions, prosperity, oppression, protest, civil rights movements and globalization as well as political, social, and economic inequalities. Paralleled musical movements and periods will include: jazz, blues, swing, rock and roll, soul, folk, country, punk, rap, metal, and others. Students will analyze the intersection of human experience and artistic expression to better understand the complex history of “American Culture” as told through music.
