Advisory Groups Create Connection

By: Alexis Mitchell

The Homer-Center High School counselors, Mr. Krejocic and Mrs.Curci decided to make sure students and teachers have deeper connections using something they came up with called Advisory Days. The counselors decided to set this up so they would “make sure every student feels like there is at least one adult in the school that they can rely on.” These days have been set up for the students to talk about “being connected with each other, knowing who to go to anytime you need help, looking at your grades, attendance, and talking about any goals you might have for the upcoming quarter.” The counselors also say that it will make students feel comfortable with not only helping each other, but reaching out to adults in the building when there is a problem.

The meetings will always be twice a quarter and usually in 10th or 11th period. “The first meeting is January 26th during period 10.” The rest of the meetings are going to be March 9 period 11, April 7 period 10, and May 12 period 11. If you would like to know who your advisor is you can log onto Sapphire and look on your schedule under “advisory group” for the name of your advisor and room number you will meet at and some students will get paper handouts. The counselors hope that this will help everyone in the school, meaning students and even all the staff in the building. Both counselors hope that with these days it will help the students to continue to feel cared about and know that they can go to someone in the school to talk about anything they need to talk about. The counselors say that everyone needs this now because “the past couple years have been tough on everyone (students, families, schools, communities). This is a perfect time to come together and support one another. Together we can help each other through the ups and downs of life.”

The counselors also hope that the teachers the students picked will be the ones they stay with for the rest of the time they are at the school. They hope that this will continue to work and affect everyone in a positive way in the long run.
