Red Ribbon Week happens every year in the last week of October. Here at Homer-Center it starts on the 25th and goes until the 29th. Red Ribbon week is organized by the students in the club SADD(Students Against Destructive Decisions) which is run by Mrs. Yurky. The goal of this week is to promote awareness of the dangers of drugs and alcohol. This event began when a Drug Enforcement Officer Enrique Camenera was kidnapped by the Mexican drug cartel. After they kidnapped him they tortured and murdered him. In his memory his friends and family wore red ribbons which created the national campaign.

We asked Mrs. Yurky “Why should students know more about Red Ribbon Week?” in which she responded,“It is very easy to think that just trying something once isn’t dangerous but, in the end, everytime someone uses drugs or alcohol irresponsibly, they risk so very much.”

SADD is such an important club in HC because over the course of the year they sponsor many activities that promote good decisions. In the past they have done things for Texting and Driving, Tobacco Awareness, Mental Health Awareness and many more. About 20 students are in SADD and this number fluctuates. “The size changes every year. I think students want to feel like they can make a difference and it is good to know that there are others who support making good decisions and that everyone is not using tobacco, drugs, and alcohol. SADD is a national organization that provides lots of leadership opportunities, as well.”

If any student is struggling with alcohol or drugs they could always go to the guidance office or any trusted adult. Some community based services are the Open Door, The Armstrong, Indiana Clarion Drug and Alcohol Commision, and many more.

Students should never feel afraid or ashamed to reach out, there will always be people who can help and won’t judge.
