Caroling in Espanol: A Homer Tradition

By: Gabi Page

Put on your Santa hats– or sombreros– because Señor Kent and his carolers are coming to town!

Every year during the week leading up to Christmas break, HC participates in a few special traditions, such as restaurant days and the ping pong tournament. One of the most beloved traditions, however, is the Spanish Christmas Carolers, led by Spanish teacher Señor Kent.

“It builds community because they all laugh together as they try to sing the words in Spanish,” Señor says. “It’s just a lot of fun. It also helps with pronunciation of the Spanish words because they’re actually reading the words as they sing them, and some of them are words that they’ve never seen before.”

Señor says that the caroling is also a nice break from our traditional class structure, which we can all certainly agree with. “We’re usually in our classes all day doing the same thing, so it’s nice to be able to get out of the classroom and give another class a little break as well,” he said.

This year, students and faculty can expect to hear Spanish Christmas songs such as the classic Feliz Navidad, Gatatumba, and Casca (Jingle) Bells. Keep your eyes (and ears) peeled for these carolers, and as always, Feliz Navidad!
