Time 4 Design
Design Situation
Hanoi International School is looking to build a new campus! This is your opportunity to design your dream school! And because we are on a mission to make the world a better place, the school will have GREEN features. It will also match our Vision and Mission.
A local environmental group has opened up a competition to develop designs for the "The ultimate sustainable home". The house can contain any elements that you want,
but must include an aspect of "green" technologies.
Key Concept: Communication
Related Concepts: Adaptation and Form
Global Contexts: Scientific and Technical Innovation
How the world works: an inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.
Statement of Inquiry: Complex ideas about sustainability are communicated and refined through the systematic adaptation of form and technical processes.
ATL Skills: Communication, Thinking
ATL skills
Communication
I. Communication skills
Exchanging thoughts, messages and information effectively through interaction
Interpret and use effectively modes of non-verbal communication
Thinking
IX. Creative thinking skills
Generating novel ideas and considering new perspectives
Design improvements to existing machines, media and technologies
Description
In order for students [Biv] develop accurate planning drawings/diagrams and outline requirements for the creation of the chosen solution), students will [CI5] Interpret and use effectively modes of non-verbal communication, [CreT5] design improvements to existing machines, media and technologies.
Learning Strategies
CI5. Interpret and use effectively modes of non-verbal communication - Observe models to identify problems/challenges and its solutions
In order for students to communicate their design development, students will learn to create drawings, such as orthographic projection using CAD software tutorials on the HIS Design website and models.
CreT5 Design improvements to existing machines, media and technologies - identify needs/challenges, and brainstorm solutions using models they have observed during the field trip.
In the past, students have visited the Pizza Hut LEED certified building , where they will were exposed to design drawing resources and sustainable refurbishment design and construction practices. Previous years sts visited the TOTO information centre, and the Global One United Nations House (GOUNH) sustainable house where they were given a presentation on how the UN have designed improvements to their office building. Another year students visited a leading architect, H&P, in Hanoi. Resources from these previous fieldtrips are available on the HIS MYP Design sustainable resources webpage. The students will think creatively to come up with solutions for their own house design.
MYP Design Cycle criterion
This is a semester long unit covering the complete MYP Criterion. The maximum awarded for each criterion is 8 marks.
Criterion A: Inquiry and Analysis
Criterion C: Creating the Solution
Digital and Product Design Skills: 2D, freehand, shading, isometric, orthographic, perspective, and 3D (CAD) software
The school is planning room changes. The Computer Lab needs to become a Design space, the library needs to be a community learning and media centre, the Auditorium needs to become more versatile, and the roof has the potential to become a Design Technology and maintenance workshop as well as a garden. You need to produce some drawings to share with the administration of the school.
