Design Situation
My task is to create a transportation toy vehicle out of wood or acrylic in order
to teach the ELC kids about transportation. My role in this situation is a
designer working for the ELC teacher to provide her with toys for the ELC kids.
My target audience is the ELC students, which are 3-4 years old.
My final product needs to have curved edges, no small pieces,
be able to entertain little kids, and be able to function correctly.
Online ELC Teacher Interview
Based on the question and answers that my class got from ELC, I found out that:
The ELC teachers need toy transportation vehicles for their classes
They need the toys to teach the 3-4 year old kids about the different types of transportation, and how they work
They also need the toys because the don’t have enough to go around and they want a bigger variety
The kids are more interested in the lessons if they have a learning tool, like a toy
The teachers need the toys to be big enough so the kids can’t swallow the parts or put them into their nose
The toys have to be light enough for the children to hold, but not light enough so they break easily
The toys should have no sharp pieces, no small pieces, and little removable parts
If I am able to accomplish and meet all of these challenges, I believe that my transportation toy will meet and maybe exceed the expectations of the clients (the ELC teachers).
Explanation and Justification
I have to design a toy transportation vehicle out of wood or acrylic to help the ELC teacher. She will be using it to teach the ELC kids about transportation. The ELC teacher has toy vehicles, but there isn’t a big variety and she needs newer ones, since the original ones are getting old. It would be important for me to complete this task because then, the ELC kids will be able to easily learn about transportation vehicles. The teacher will have newer, better toys, and the kids will have a bigger variety of toys to play with. The teacher will also have to teach them about a bigger variety of transportation vehicles, and the toys will help attract their attention. If the situation is not solved, then the ELC kids will not be able to have new toys to play with, and the transportation unit will be less interesting because the kids won’t have as much toys to play with to keep their attention.
