Time 4 Design
Design Situation
Students are set a design problem that the HIS Library has asked students to design and make a prototype 6 to-10 page pop-up book. The book must be A4 in size, which will include a spine. The book is aimed at lower elementary children, and must be eye-catching and interesting to capture their imaginations. The story should be based on a children's story from another culture to their own.
It must contain a range of card mechanisms such as rotary, v-fold, internal stand, mouth and slide. The pop-up book will need to be easy to read See attached file of words used by PKK students) and be distinctive as well as cheap to produce. The colour scheme will be chosen carefully so that card appears bright and cheerful.
Students will need to consider the images that are used, colours and fonts. Careful consideration should be given to the front page, using semantic title designs and bold images.
The finished books will be read to Elementary students and displayed in the library during Book Week.

1. Explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem
What is the nature of the problem?
Who is it a problem for?
Where is the problem occurring?
What is the cause of the problem?
What effect is the problem having?
Undertake one or more of these strategies to answer the above questions:
Create a visual Brainstorm of some possible problems to solve
Collecting data from experts to confirm there is a real need for a solution to the problem (interview a librarian or elementary teacher)
Now use the above information to explain and justify the need to solve the problem
Samples of 'explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem' here.
Due to a shortage of interactive books available in the HIS Library for elementary students to read the school librarian has asked you as a designer to......
2. Develop a Research Plan, which identifies and prioritizes primary and secondary research needed to develop a solution to the problem.
Teacher Tip: Clearly prioritises the primary and secondary research including related research questions, in order of importance from ‘points that will help most with solving the problem’ down to ‘points that may be less helpful to solving the problem, and source of research.
Your Research plan should include: (You'll need about 10-12 different questions)
Existing Pop-Up books
Famous Pop-Up book Designers
Themes for your book
Basic to advanced Paper Engineering techniques
Video tutorials
Card Mechanisms
Typography
Drawing techniques, Binding techniques, Paper size and grade, Drawing and printing processes, materials
Interview or survey your target audience on what stories excite them
Use a table with similar headings to the one below:
3. Follow your research plan and analyse existing Pop-Up Books that inspire a solution to the problem:
(This goes in the main body of your document)
Follow your Research Plan and undertake the remainder of your research.
Put the research content under a heading called "Appendix" in a numbered reference i.e. 1.1, 1.2, 2.1…cited appropriately
4. Develop a detailed Design Brief, which summarises the analysis of relevant research.
See samples of how to start your brief below:
Developing a RoofTop Garden
'After speaking to the client, Mr Chinh, he noted 'large plants such as climbing ivy would be best for the rooftop garden' (Appendix 3.1). Climbing ivy can reach the heights that you allow it to (Appendix 1.4) but Mr Chinh requires the plant display to be 'no more than 2 metres high' (Appendix 3.1). This information allows the height of the plant display to be determined and the species of plant it will hold.'
Video Advertisement for Music School
Our client, Mr G's music school in Hanoi Vietnam had initially approached our design team due to difficulty of establishing themselves as a top music school for 12-18 year old student who want to pursue their music career. Mr G's also want to be better known to the wider community of Hanoi of expatriate families settling in the country as funding is also stopping the growth of the school. Our design team believes that commercial advertising is an essential element that could turn this around. After undertaking research into several different focus areas, this is a summary of the useful and concise information that is relevant to aid the development of a solution to the problem:
After interviewing the owner of the Mr G's music school (Apendix1.1) we established that the following key elements should be included in the advertisement – introduction to how the school was established, location, and types of music offered by the school, success stories………….and so on
With these key requirements by the owner our team began to analyse what makes a video advertisement successful (Appendix 2.1 to 2.4). We discovered .... and so on
Teacher Tip
The analysis and summary must be presented in a design brief, a series of detailed paragraphs that present only the useful information.
The brief shouldn’t solve the problem at this stage, but instead outline what the student intends to design to solve the problem, provide answers to each of the research questions, and clarify the essential and desirable features of a solution.
It should also state any determined values that the design must meet
Write a complete bibliography and refer to appendices
5. Check Rubric before submission
Have you:
· Given a clear explanation about the problem that needs to be solved, including important details and requirements and clearly identifies the client
· Justified why there is a need to solve this problem
· Clearly and independently constructs a personal plan for research in order to design and create a solution to the problem
· Clearly prioritizes the planned primary and secondary research in order of importance from ‘points that will help most with solving the problem’ down to ‘points that may be less helpful to solving the problem’
· Looked at a group of products that inspire a solution to the problem and clearly analyzing the different features which could be useful to understand or to include when designing their own solution and includes reasoning for why those features might be useful in their solution
· The Research from the research plan that was described earlier (ii) is presented in a clear and concise summary to give an overview of the findings that are relevant to the design and creation of the solution.
· Ranges of different sources are clearly and appropriately cited.
