Design Situation
The Chair of the Digital Citizenship committee (Ms Deb) wants advice in a public service announcement (PSA) to be shared on Radio HIS in the form of a podcast. The summative tasks for this unit will be to develop podcasts in different languages offering advice on how to be good Digital Citizens. The podcast should use Radio HIS jingles and sound effects. It should be no longer than 10 minutes long. (Rewrite this in your own words at task 1)
NEW DESIGN SITUATION (August 2022)
Radio HIS are looking for new shows. Your job is to find out what the community wants and needs from their radio station- after all it is FOR YOU, BY YOU.
1. Explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem
What is the nature of the problem?
Who is it a problem for?
Where is the problem occurring?
What is the cause of the problem?
What effect is the problem having?
Debatable How effective can a podcast be in changing attitudes towards cyber bullying?
Undertake one or more of these strategies to answer the above questions:
Create a visual Brainstorm of some possible problems to solve
Collecting data from experts to confirm there is a real need for a solution to the problem
(interview a librarian, teacher or other education professional)
Use the QUESTIONAIRE survey RESULTS sent out from Mr Chase to help you.
Rewrite the design situation in your own words and include the points highlighted in G-R-A-S-P in your paragraph.
G = Goal: Your task is…
R = Role: You are a…
A = Audience “Your audience is…
S = Situation: The challenge involves dealing with…
P = Purpose: You will create a _____ in order to ______.
Now use the above information to explain and justify the need to solve the problem see sample from Mr Stevenson
Due to a need to address some digital citizenship issues such as cyber-bullying, Ms Deb the librarian and Chair of the Digital Citizenship committee has asked you as a designer to......

2. Develop a Research Plan, which identifies and prioritizes primary and secondary research needed to develop a solution to the problem.
Start with a brainstorm
Teacher Tip: Clearly prioritizes the primary and secondary research including related research questions, in order of importance from ‘points that will
help most with solving the problem’ down to ‘points that may be less helpful to solving the problem, and source of research.
Your research plan could include (among other things)...
Famous podcasts (Appendix and referred to in the Brief)
Themes for your podcast (Appendix and referred to in the Brief)
Theories, advantages, and disadvantages of using podcasts (Appendix and referred to in the Brief)
Basic to advanced podcast design techniques (Appendix and referred to in the Brief)
Equipment and software needed (we will be using Audacity and Soundtrap)
Video tutorials (Appendix and referred to in the Brief)
Sound effects/psychology (Appendix and referred to in the Brief)
Interview or survey your client or target audience on what level of difficulty is appropriate (Appendix and referred to in the Brief)
One possible format for your research plan could be a table like this:
3. Follow your research plan and analyse a group of similar products (existing podcasts) that inspire a solution to the problem
You should upload one of your podcasts to VoiceThread and add your analytical comments- this will include a brief description and then discuss more of the features and how they are pros or cons. These will be inspiration for your own podcast.
(This goes in the main body of your document) podcast
Actual Research should be attached in the form of an Appendix and referred to in the summary brief (iv) in a numbered reference
i.e. 1.1, 1.2, 2.1…cited appropriately refer to your research plan
4. Develop a detailed Design Brief, which summarises the analysis of relevant research.
The analysis and summary must be presented in a design brief, a series of detailed paragraphs that present only the useful information.
The brief shouldn’t solve the problem at this stage, but instead outline what the student intends to design to solve the problem,provide answers to each of the research questions, and clarify the essential and desirable features of a solution.
It should also state any determined values that the design must meet
Write a complete bibliography and refer to appendices
5. Check Rubric before submission
Have you:
clearly identified a client?
given a clear explanation (details + reasons/causes) about the problem that needs to be solved?
included important details and requirements for any solution to the client's problem?
justified (citing evidence) why there is a need to solve this problem?
clearly constructed a personal plan for research in order to design and create a solution to the problem?
clearly prioritized the research that may be helpful in solving the problem?
identified which research items are primary research and which are secondary research?
looked at a group of products that inspire a solution to the problem?
clearly analyzed the different features of those products which could be useful to understand or to include when designing your own solution?
included reasoning for why those features might be useful in your solution?
followed the research plan that was described earlier?
presented in a clear and concise summary to give an overview of the findings that are relevant to the design and creation of the solution?
clearly and appropriately cited a range of different sources?
