Mentor: Dr. Filippo Chillemi, Specialty Clinics of Georgia- Orthopedics
Surgery centers are coming to represent a major reconstruction within the medical field, as they have grown to amount to over five thousand three hundred in the United States only in the past few decades. Frequently, when one is mentioned or suggested by a doctor, the patient knows only little about them but is forced to make a decision concerning their physical condition upon such limited knowledge. Realizing the community’s need for more knowledge regarding surgery centers, I asked the question “how can I differentiate between having surgery performed at a surgery center and at a traditional hospital?” Through my presentation, I intend to inform more individuals on the subject of surgery centers, as well as provide a firm foundation necessary to make a wise decision with regard to their health. The primary factors one may wish to consider when choosing between a surgery center and a hospital include cost, safety, and comfort. My research includes experience mentoring with an orthopedic surgeon, where I have been able to observe both pre-op and post-op consultations, as well as an interview with my mentor and multiple electronically-published medical journals.
