Throughout my research, I have sought information about music and its effect on the developing brain. I have discovered music to be essential to a child’s development as well as evidence regarding its necessity. My findings have given me understanding and reasons as to why a child should be educated in music. The reasons are the following: music furthers brain development, improves study skills, develops gross and fine motor skills, teaches creative problem solving, and improves memory skills. Playing music uses virtually every part of the brain, therefore growing the brain larger and more capable. Structured practice and exercises help to build academic and study skills. Dancing and specific hand movements while playing an instrument develop motor skills. Music uses both sides of the brain, thus causing the creative and logical sides to interact and work together to find creative problem solutions. The stronger brain also gives rise to a stronger memory. Learning music teaches these skills in children as no other activity does. Music is unique in this regard. This information demonstrates why children should be educated in music and why music should continue to be taught in the school system.
