Dry needling is a technique commonly used within physical therapy to relieve pain. Dry needling involves inserting a slim needle into a targeted area, called trigger points, to alleviate the pain. Dry needling differs from acupuncture because dry needling is solely dependent on the interaction between the muscles and bones. The needle creates a small “injury” which causes the brain to send endorphins to the targeted area. Although there is some controversy over the effectiveness of dry needling, I have observed many patients say that it significantly helps them.
