Whether we realize it or not, elements of graphic design exist all around us. It’s in every billboard we see, every advertisement, every t-shirt we wear, and even in the media we watch and listen to. While you may not ever really consciously notice well designed media, most people can tell the difference between something that looks good, and between something that doesn’t look so good. With that in mind, many people will not pay for media that doesn’t look well designed, and your business and customer satisfaction will drop as a result. The purpose in my research was to explain why this difference exists, what it’s called, and how it’s used in everyday design work. From this research, I have delved more deeply into the elements and principles of design, and the reasons why they are important in the modern day design world, as well as how they influence individual graphic design businesses and customers. I am very thankful to my Honors Mentorship experience for showing me how to be a better designer, as well as for the opportunity to learn more about the world of graphic design. I plan to utilize this information in my post-secondary education, as a potential career later in life.
