Almost every day, people see or hear an advertisement that immediately catches their attention and maintains their interest. This phenomenon is not a coincidence; companies invest heavily in the act of advertising products to their market. With the use of the Internet, companies and organizations have greater access to their markets and can also communicate with consumers easily, especially as social media becomes increasingly more relevant. To further increase the impact of their advertisements, companies often rely on psychological tactics and reasonings. Advertisements tend to emphasize sensations that ultimately lead to a purchase or action from the consumer by appealing to the consumer’s emotions. During my internship, I learned specific techniques that engage different demographics, which include younger children, teenagers, and parents. The techniques often rely on the use of visuals and colors, thus reaffirming my belief that even the smallest detail can greatly impact a consumer. While the knowledge of psychology is a benefit to companies as it will help them relate to and attract consumers on an emotional and mental level, consumers may not always be aware of the driving force behind their purchases and/or actions.
