When most individuals describe an Emergency Room most people think of chaos and gore. At least, that is what I had thought of -- especially after having binged watched all seasons of Grey’s Anatomy. However, what struck me the most was not the wounds or blood but the raw emotions of the patients. Many patients are not only suffering physically but emotionally as well. Fortunately, they have medical staff to assist them with their physical health but at times they do not have any personnel to assist them with their emotional health. This prompted me to my essential question: How does integrating more social services in the Emergency Room, assist with the mental health of not only patients but as well as family members and staff? With my essential question, I was able to discover the different roles of a social worker plays in the Emergency Room. With the help of my mentors, I was able to see how the Northeast Georgia Medical Center can further help the mental health of patients by including social workers more in the ED.
