Social media is notorious for the negative self perceptions it breeds. Marketing on social media creates the perfect opportunity to either boost a company or scam a consumer. Research has shown the growing distrust between consumer and company because of social media marketing. Consumers are becoming aware of the products that offer false promises, but many are still being harmed by the unrealistic expectations or harmful side effects. By understanding the differences between false advertising (often done by social media influencers) and the marketing done by professional businesses, consumers can protect themselves from fiscal harm as well as mental harm.
