Mentors: Alejandra Cortes, PCT, Northeast Georgia Medical Center
For centuries, hierarchies of gender have affected society in different ways. Both men and women possess similar abilities, yet somehow their mental capabilities are polar opposite--or so they say. Recently, there has been an increase of women in medical careers, yet before it was a career pathway like many other STEM careers that lacked the presence of women. The amount of women in STEM careers have increased because of the cultural change that is and has been occurring throughout our new generation. As an intern inside the very own Northeast Georgia Medical center, I was able to witness the first-hand impacts of both men and women in the medical fields. As I experienced more hours in the ER, I was able to diagnose patients with greater ease, I learned to hook a patient up to IV’s and 5 lead electrodes, while also learning how to really connect and interact with them. While I spent more hours in the ER, I also payed more attention to the gender gap. This topic is important as I am a female pursuing a medical career--specifically a surgeon pathway. I wanted to study the environment and the mentality of individuals who have personally seen these specific environments for ages. It is interesting to see the reasons behind such phenomenons other than just gender bias. This topic and this internship have opened my eyes and allowed me to realize that passion and motivation should be the drive to whatever a person decides to pursue. As a young woman, this topic and this internship have allowed me to really decide what I want to do with my life as I move on into college and pursue my degree.
