Mentors: Margaret Kuneyl and Christiane Bridges, Peach State Pediatric Therapy
The goal of occupational therapists is to help their patients gain as much independence as possible even if they do have disabilities. Especially in pediatrics where the early intervention is key because you can only improve from there. From something as simple as being able to pour themselves a cup of orange juice or being able to independently change their clothing can make a huge impact in someone’s life. It is important to find a way to thrive with the cards that you have been dealt with. This is where the difference between thriving and surviving comes in. When a person whether with disabilities or not, has the desire to do more than just simply coast through life they are already taking the initiative to thrive. Occupational therapists are working to help their patients thrive in life and get the most out of it. They want to see their patients succeed and be happy even if they have to get through some obstacles first. Our fast-paced society is constantly pushing people to live a habitual lifestyle. Most people do not have the chance to remove themselves from the chaos and take a break. They don’t look at the bigger picture and realize that there is more to life. Life can be hard and come with its difficulties but it can also be beautiful; filled with love, adventures, curiosity, excitement, and nothing should stand in your way of that.
