Mission: The Bulb is a direct-service nonprofit advancing equitable, barrier-free access to fresh, nutritious produce through place-based mobile farmers markets in underserved communities. Our markets center around choice and are shaped by collaboration with local farms, grocery partners, and neighborhood leaders—supporting a healthier, more sustainable, and resilient Charlotte.
Opportunities
Position: Nonprofit Intern
Position Description: The Bulb Intern will gain hands-on experience across The Bulb's mobile market and food access programs, supporting day-to-day program operations while contributing to broader organizational work in community engagement, data, and documentation. This role is designed to give the intern a well-rounded view of how a grassroots nonprofit runs, not just one slice of it.
Responsibilities and Objectives
The Nonprofit Intern will rotate across several parts of The Bulb's work, including:
Mobile Market & Program Support: Help prepare and transport supplies and produce, set up and break down markets, and assist with guest check-in, bagging, and restocking at our barrier-free, choice-based markets.
Food Systems & Logistics: Assist with labeling, organizing, and maintaining produce in the cooler; sort and repackage food rescue donations; weigh and track produce and composted items to support program reporting.
Community & Communications: Interact with market guests and volunteers, and depending on interest, contribute to communications materials such as recipe or produce info cards, social content, or partner-facing updates.
Organizational Support: Help maintain the cleanliness and organization of the headquarters, cooler, and vehicles, and pitch in on general operational tasks as needed.
Intern-Led Project: Depending on the intern's skills, interests, and hours available, they may lead a specific project. Past interns have managed initiatives such as historic data clean-up, website redesign, cooler/space optimization, market food valuation, and nutrition education development. Projects are designed to give ownership and support evolving organizational priorities.

Experience with process improvement, inventory systems, and operational planning.
Skill development in communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and project management.

Insight into social justice–oriented food access work and grassroots nonprofit management.
Required or Preferred Skills
Service-oriented mindset and strong communication skills
Proactive, positive, and inclusive
Comfortable with lifting (up to 30 lbs) during market and food-handling work
Organized and detail-oriented
Access to reliable transportation and technology (cell phone & laptop)
Spanish language fluency preferred, but not required
Office Environment: The intern will work primarily at The Bulb's headquarters at Innovation Barn, sharing a workspace with staff and interacting daily with the team and volunteers. The role includes both in-office responsibilities and fieldwork at weekly mobile markets, food sorting, and partner deliveries, giving the intern real exposure to how a small, growing nonprofit operates day-to-day.
Supervision and Communication: The Nonprofit Intern will be supervised by a member of The Bulb's staff team and fully integrated into our small, close-knit organization. Weekly check-ins and monthly team meetings will provide guidance, feedback, and space to discuss projects and priorities. Communication and collaboration will use Slack for messaging, Google Workspace for documents, and Airtable for scheduling, with email for formal communications. Interns receive structured support on their responsibilities and skill-based projects, with ongoing feedback and room to contribute their own ideas.
The position can adjust around the student's schedule. The Bulb's operations run Monday through Saturday; schedules are provided every other week, and interns are expected to communicate any conflicts in advance. Interns will have a dedicated workspace with office supplies and access to operational tools, and arenexpected to bring a laptop and cell phone.
